De Oliebollenkraam
Oliebollen or “oil balls” is the Dutch version of a fried dough snack that’s also known around the world by different names and different recipes. The Dutch oliebollen are larger in size and served covered in powdered sugar.
I first came across this scene on a walk around town after a long day of work, right after sunset. The colors and the lights of the oliebollen stall caught my eyes immediately. I wanted to take a photo of the stall but for whatever reason I decided to head home, and maybe, I will get the chance to make it another day…
For the next few evenings, I kept going back to the same location, however; it was always closed. I kept going back whenever I had the time, until two weeks later — when the shop finally resumed work. That’s when I also did some research and found out that it’s a Dutch custom to eat oliebollen until the new year’s.
And so I decided to photograph all the oliebollen stalls I come across and put this small project together (and also buy some of these delicious oliebollen whenever I have the chance).
